Cleverly branded as “Raleigh’s most unique address,” Broadstone Oak City is an apartment community built on what used to be a 1960’s era hotel. The design is influenced by its’ former resident and 1960’s nostalgia.
Broadstone Oak City was cleverly branded as “Raleigh’ most unique address”. The design teams were encouraged to expand upon Oak City’s story to create not only a unique address, but an eccentric design on Capital Boulevard. Formerly the address had been home to an eye-sore for the community known as the Capital Plaza Hotel. The former hotel changed ownership many times since its grand opening in the 1960’s. Oak City’s amenity spaces within the stand-alone community building featured classic mid-century interior architecture and motifs. The exuberant mix of modern amenities, such as co-working, a playful fitness center, sound room and clubroom captivated the urban community.
Additional to the community building, the designers team up with our in-house experimental graphics group to create a 60-foot-high mural off the main residential building. The mural embodies the story of the site with promoting the new community directly off Capital Boulevard.
A 1960’s era hotel was the previous tenant of the site that Broadstone Oak City now resides on. The building features decorative CMU blocks, mid-century finishes, clean lines, graphic shapes, vibrant accent colors, muted field colors, and integrated outdoor motifs in CMU and brick, all of which inspired by the 60’s. The clubroom artwork gives a nod to the hotel pool originally on site with nostalgic photography. Interior finishes include walnut wood tones on the millwork, classic white quartz countertops, and bold black and white tile accents on floors and walls. A custom built Lite-Brite sits directly inside the entrance to the leasing office. The corridors, garnished with mid-century finishes, clean lines, and vibrant accent colors, provide a modern aesthetic while paying homage to the space’s 1960’s era roots, balanced by a bold black and white tile floor. Nestled by the original hotel pool, this clubroom features nostalgic pool photography with a backdrop of walnut wood tones and classic white quartz counter tops. fitness center provides residents with a utilitarian space while still highlighting the retro roots of the lot with psychedelic mirrors and dynamic shapes in the flooring. While respecting its’ roots, Broadstone Oak City creates a fresh and modern approach to 1960’s nostalgia.
The urban Mid-century aesthetic allowed for a heavy mix of pattern and texture that woven together created site’s long history of mid-century hospitality. With the use of form, function and play at the center of the design, the interior architecture gives back a since of youth to the professional residents. These new buildings have created a new identity for the underutilized site at a high-visibility location and excited the community of Raleigh.
