The Durham Studio Project relocates this 50+ person design office from a suburban office park to the second floor of a 1960’s Brutalists style office building in downtown Durham, North Carolina. The move accomplishes a more compact, efficient and sustainable office environment by reducing lease area from 317sf/desk to 193sf/desk and the new urban context provides a more appealing and inspiring setting for staff of all ages.
The design recognizes architecture’s migration from working as individuals to team oriented design efforts. In response, the studio is compact with multiple teaming environments located central to the studio. The studio is characterized by an open and efficient arrangement of space that connects employees to each other, the work they do and their Durham context.

Judges Comments:
“Simplicity of the building shines through. Great views from almost every space. Use of materials are well selected. Strong use of lighting to support the architecture and add interest. The plan is clear/intuitive and adaptable over time.”
