Wayfinding and positive distractions are two integral drivers for the WakeMed Apex Pediatric Clinic; a prototype for them to shorten wait times and increase efficiency through self-check in, self-rooming, and on-stage/off-stage design. With these concepts in mind, it was imperative that the space was designed to intuitively guide visitors where they need to go. This was accomplished with vibrant colors, shapes, and floor patterns.  The elevator doors open and a child is surprised to see a bright green volume of space lined with tablets; the self-check-in hub. The child helps his/her parent check in and begins the path of discovery as they walk toward an orange wall that leads them to a clue: a large red ceiling cloud down the hallway. Here a graphic sign tells them which way to turn, left toward the yellow corridor or right toward the blue one. Both are marked with circles in the floor making it easy to find the destination; the exam room. The theme of bright colors and circles is repeated in the staff-only off-stage collaboration zone as well as in the waiting lounge, where families can work, relax, or explore. Here one of most prominent features can be found: a custom circular seating cubby for children. These elements of design come to together to create a clinic that invites, engages, and guides those who experience it.

Judges Comments:

“Clear and intuitive wayfinding strategies create a memorable experience for patients and their families.  Interesting way to approach the idea of self-rooming in clinical spaces.”
