Poppyseed Provisions is a general store featuring everything from provisions to grab and go meals to penny candy. It’s the brainchild of a local small business construction team/ owner looking to create a community-focused destination where people can sit and enjoy a glass of wine or local craft beer on tap while picking up a last-minute dinner, a few things for the pantry, or a locally-made gift. The goal was a welcoming and approachable space that would feel familiar and comfortable yet still modern and interesting.
The design team went all-in on this transformation of an existing space and challenged budget, working closely with the contractor/ owner in a rapidly-evolving design-build process (kickoff to opening in three months). The final design references memory and history in a layered and modern way. Key standout finishes—like the brick and tile behind the bar—bring a sense of the past, as if they were part of the original building. Others—the wallcovering in the back cooler area—speak to a more contemporary sensibility.
Two nesting tables and the bar—both designed by the design team and built by the client’s own in-house construction team—create focal points and landing spots for those gathering over a glass of wine or craft beer. Similarly, shelving along the side walls is custom designed and built; painted a soft farmhouse green, the shelving makes the products shine. Overscale lighting makes it clear—this space is neither replication nor nostalgic throwback but a welcoming respite for visitors and locals alike.
