The roots of the interior design concept for this 75-room boutique hotel lay both in the building’s history and the building itself. Originally a glamorous department store famous in the region, the large open spaces and high ceilings of the main floor were perfectly suited to be transformed into lobby, café and bar as a new destination for guests and locals alike. Space planning brought the activity to the forefront at street level, taking advantage of the hotel’s location on a prominent corner in downtown Winston-Salem. Clever divider walls and booths leave sight lines open; the main area becomes a “beacon” of activity at all times of the day and speaks to the arts/gallery-vibe of Winston’s downtown. On the mezzanine, an artful mix of furniture references the building’s earlier life as a high-end furniture store and offers those looking for a quieter experience a place of escape. At this level, guests can get a close-up look at the touch of gilt highlighting the column detailing. The interior detailing and layered texture reference that of the building’s exterior. Custom-designed casegoods in the guestrooms also harken back to the building’s earlier life. Much of the art is by local artists; vibrant colors and often local references add to the eclectically artistic room design. The complex geometries, textures and layered construction of finishes and fabrics, wallcovering and rugs – even the pattern of a nearby building reflected on/in the window.
