Re-Cap from the march leadership summit + annual meeting
The inaugraul leadership summit was a HUGE SUCCESS with over 100 attendes!
The AIA Center for Architecture and Design venue in Raleigh provided a great backdrop for the annual meeting.
Thank you to Stacy Walker with Milliken, Jim Williamson with Gensler and current International President of IIDA, Brenda Nevidjon Professor at the Duke University School of Nursing, and David Diaz with Downtown Raleigh Alliance for presenting, moderating, and participating on our leadership panel.
Stacy Walker's CEU presentation, Creating a culture of innovation, was informative and well delivered. Some take aways include three keys to leadership 1) effective creative leadership, 2) support from organizational heirarchy, and 3) culture that values and nurtures creativity.
Jim Williamson's brief presentation on the POWER of designwas very engaging and precisely executed.
The comments from the panel (Jim, Brenda, David) on leadership were thought provoking and crossed a broad range of fields (nursing/healthcare, design, downtown development). A take away from this; traits of a good leader include being a mentor, a coach, listening well, being humble, and being open to criticism.
Congratulations to our student scholastic scholarship award winner, Brianna Germond from Applachian State University

GAINING AND RETAINING CLIENTS
IDCEC Course #40260.1 CEU credit – 1 hour
Gaining and retaining clients is critical to the ongoing success of a firm…however, many designers and architects do not consider the impact of how they engage with their clients to establish a trust relationship. By using a different scope of research to aid in the understanding of your client’s business and developing insightful questions, you will become a more valuable and trusted resource to your client base. Repeatedly operating in this manner will greatly aid in acceptance of your Design solutions and build your base of business as you gain and retain clients. -Position you and your firm where design truly matters to their business-Establish your uniqueness and differentiation-Develop key questions demonstrating preparation and understanding for engagements -Engage with your client in a manner that resonates with them using their language-Effectively research your clients to prepare for building rapport and credibilityLearning Objectives:

Our Chapter's Annual Meeting, held on April 16, 2011, provided the exciting opportunity to officially present the selected Carolinas Interior Design Student with her Scholastic Award! After competing with a number of other design student finalists for the award, winner Sydney Kerschen, a Junior Interior Design major at Appalachian State University was selected based on her strong academic performance, faculty recommendation, essay submission and impressive personal interview and portfolio review. The Carolinas Chapter is pleased to be able to recognize the talents of a future professional in our local design community with this scholastic award!
A bit about what set Sydney apart ~ Originally from Cary, NC, Ms. Kerschen is a Junior Interior Design major at Appalachian State University. Sydney’s interesting approach to her portfolio and her unique professionalism set her apart from the other finalists. Sydney is passionate about design and told us: “I have always loved art and design but kind of stumbled into interior design. After my first intro class my freshman year I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.” She is also very interested in the psychology behind design. “I love being able to understand why and how the spaces we create affect people the way they do.”
On behalf of the IIDA Carolinas Chapter, we wish Sydney the best as she finishes her Interior Design education, and expect great things from her as she enters our local design community in the coming year!
